Not a very pleasant night…or should I say nights

My little girl has been coughing in her sleep for the last few nights. It’s affecting her sleep and mine. The coughing would wake her and then I’ll need to walk (and pat) for at least 15 minutes to put her back to sleep. Just as she was slowly getting back to having slightly better nights this happens!

It is more frustrating tonight because she didn’t want to go back to sleep. She thought 34 minutes of sleep is enough!!! I tried walking her to sleep after she was up a bit, she was rubbing eyes and yawning. 40 minutes later she was still wide awake; so much for tired signs. I’m a small build woman and she is not exactly light (has always been at the 75th percentile for weight since 4 weeks old). My arms and back hurt. I gave up on the “no feeding for 2 hours” rule and tried to feed her 50 minutes since the start of last feed. Instead of feeding and falling asleep as I have hoped she decided to bite. Sigh. There goes my last resource for getting her back to sleep quickly. What it means is I’ll need to wait the 2 hour since she’s up before trying to get her to sleep again. By this time it’s already passed mid-night. To top it off, she pooped while sitting on my lap. I dislike poop at night because it means more awake after nappy change.  It was no ordinary poo as well, we’ve got ourselves a leaked poo!!! Oh my, so much fun. Since my daughter has started solid, her poo is thicker and more in volume (Sorry if it grosses you out but after being a mum and dealing with poo everyday, talking about poo is like talking about the weather nowadays). The poo got pushed and leaked out from the back, it soaked all the way to the sleeping bag. Sigh, need to change ALL her clothes and wipe her clean. After everything is, it’s been 2 hours since she’s up. I can finally tried feeding her to sleep again and she did eventually fall asleep in my arm while feeding. I went to shower and came back and saw her blanket moved, I knew she has been up while I was showering but Richard walked her back to sleep again.

While I’ve been typing this, she woke up twice already. Seriously, when will her sleep gets better? Can I have the three magically nights of sleep through back please? Now that she is unwell, she only does one 3 hours stretch and the rest are 2 hours or less. The lack of sleep is affecting my mood and tolerance to get my little girl to sleep.

Please tell me this is only a phase and I’ll see the end of the tunnel soon?


A battle to get baby to sleep

Wow, it has been two years since my last post here. A lot has happened and the most exciting bit is being a wife and a mum. Interesting enough a few of my friends were pregnant around the same time but my little girl being the oldest. My daughter has recently turned 5 months old! Lol, yeah, 5 months not 5 years old. I’ve been meaning to dedicate a post about my child birth experience but during the early days of sleep deprivation, the idea of blogging can only remains as an idea. Now that I’m more used to sleeping less, I get to enjoy my me time after mid-night. I think I’ll write a post each for the different things I’ve experienced so far. Today I’ll focus on sleep since this is the biggest issue I have up till now.

Say goodbye to your me time since you’ll be looking after your kid 24/7. You can only squeeze in a bit of time during their nap and if they nap for more than 20 minutes that is. Getting the baby to sleep can be a battle already. There are a lot of methods out there that teach you how to get your baby to sleep better and on their own. Since both Richard and I don’t want our little girl to cry, we scraped the Cry it out and Controlled crying method. Yeah, I heard they worked but I’ve read articles that said crying can have a negative impact; although they are not crying but inside they are still feeling stress. Besides, I believe she can cry for more than an hour non-stop so why torture the three of us? What it means is more work for us to get her to sleep and to get back to sleep when she wakes up during the night. Baby can be a naturally good sleeper but sadly my daughter is not one. I get jealous when my friend told me how her daughter can sleep on her own and have a long stretch like 5 to 6 hours (they didn’t do any of the crying method). Of course she also has bad nights too. My daughter is already doing much better than she was 2 months ago though. For the first two months, she is up every hour to two hours. It’s a challenge to put her to cot to sleep. She would start crying already when I had her hover over her cot BEFORE I even lay her down. I don’t know how she knew without opening her eyes. So through out the night she slept poorly and then during the day she caught up on sleep on her incline chair (my mother in law looks after her during the day so I can get more rest and she gets her to sleep on the chair). At 2 months, I had enough and decided to be persistent to get my daughter to sleep in her cot for day time naps as well. The morning nap she would sleep in the inclined chair because I live with my in-laws so letting my mother in law to spend times with her. In the afternoon, I’ll fully take charge in getting her to sleep. It was a tough month. I could spend an hour fighting to get her to sleep in cot successfully, but the hard work pays off now that it is much easier to get to cot while she is asleep. Yes, while she is asleep and not awake. Experts teach to get baby down when they are sleepy but awake so baby learn to self settle at night. I couldn’t lay her down without crying so end up getting her to sleep first every time. There is no right or wrong, it’s to do what’s needed to get the much needed sleep for both the baby and the parents. Anyway, my daughter can get an hour or more for each nap compared to the 10 to 20minute she used to do. The getting her to sleep before putting to cot doesn’t mean she won’t have long stretch at night. At 4 months, we’ve experienced the most wonderful 3 nights since my daughter was born. She actually slept through!! Yes, the proper 7h, 8.5h and 6h for three consecutive nights. Learn from our mistake, avoid late night activity at all cost. We naively had a halloween party at my parents with friends over. My daughter didn’t sleep that well during that day and at night she was over stimulated with all the friends over. That night she didn’t sleep until after mid-night and we went home after 3am. My daughter was fully awake from the drive home and didn’t sleep again until 5am. Then for the next 21 days and counting, her night sleep is totally screwed. A lot of the nights she didn’t sleep until close to mid-night and a couple being past mid-night again. Lost her long stretch and to be waken every 2 hour or to have 3h to 4h stretch if lucky. We are still paying the price for one night of fun. Yes, I know how restricted you feel to have to care for your little one. Try to organise activities during the day to get some fresh air and leave the night for bub to sleep. Hopefully my daughter can sleep through again.  All right, I better get some shut eye before my daughter decides to wake up to have a night feed.
