Finally, I have some time to to blog. 3 weeks ago, I went to Contagious Network’s Bad Grandpa movie preview with Richard. I have never watched any Jackass movie before and didn’t know they do life prank on people to get their reactions until I watched their trailer. I thought I’ll still give it a go hoping not much of the hand over mouth moment. The main story line is the 86 year-old Irving Zisman on a road trip with his 8 year old Grandson Billy to drop him off with his dad. Along the way, bringing audiences into scenes with hidden cameras.Pranks, pranks and more pranks!!
At the beginning of the film, what I’ve feared happened. “Omg, I can’t believe he did that!!” crossed my mind a lot while having hands on my head but few people laughed nonetheless. As the movie progressed,I found myself laughing more and more. Other people got warmed up toward the movie too I guess because the movie theatre was filled with laughter when they pull one of their pranks. I have to say their pranks were often cliche but very well executed. One thing I don’t understand is how they get permission to have a kid (Jackson Nicoll) staring in the movie. Everything in the movie is not exactly role model material. Anyhoo, I enjoyed the movie and got my laugh out of it.
I’ve watched The Hunger Games with Richard and his brother last Friday. I don’t know why I left the cinema with a mixture of feelings and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It kinda bug me. It’s not that I loved the movie as some scenes sadden me; just couldn’t quite put a finger on what cause my weird feelings. Maybe I’m wondering what’s going to happen between Katniss and Peeta, Katniss and Gale and all the whole of District 12. All these drew me to the book as I could read on and find out about the ultimate ending. Also, I want to read the original version of The Hunger Games. I’ve just started reading the book and some parts are different already. I think I favour the book more and Katniss wasn’t as social awkward as the movie illustrated to be.
The movie isn’t bad really but for those who had watched Battle Royale would critise it’s a tone down version of it – bringing teenagers together to kill each other. Yes, I’ve watched Battle Royale many years ago and remembered it was all bloody and violent. Anyhow, a little about the story is that Katniss volunteered to be the girl tribute of District 12 to protect her chosen younger sister Primrose while Peeta was the chosen boy tribute to enter the 74th annual Hunger Game. The Capitol, where the game is going to be held, see this as a festive event. The game will be broadcast on television and those who enters the Hunger Game will need to keep their head and neck attached so to speak to win. And of course a movie will rarely go without some romance.
Time to get back to my novel reading…..=)
I was invited to an advanced screening to the movie, War Horse, a couple of weeks ago. I am not a fan of War movies but do like horses thus my expectation of the movie wasn’t that high. Honestly, I’ve got a bit worry when I heard the movie is going to be 2 hours 40 mins. To my surprise, it didn’t feel long at all.
The story sets in World War I, scenes in the movie althernate between war and open grassy land, contrasting between gloomy grey and bright green. The main theme of the movie is about the bonding between the horse and it’s encounters – both horse and human. Although it’s around the World War I period, it lacks the action comparing to the limited War movies I’ve watched. There were some gun and cannon shots but the war was quickly skipped over. There are some depressing elements in the movie of what people faced during the War and how horses are being mistreated. Having said that, there are humours to balance the movie as well.
I would say this is a War movie for girls. It leans toward emotions and feelings rather than full on action. Overall, I’ve enjoyed it and really, it didn’t feel like it’s 2 hours and 40 mins long.
Work has been so busy that I worked day and night. Finally I got the chance to sit down and write the review that’s been in my head for a month!
Last month, I attended an advanced screening of a new comedy, Easy A. It is a high school comedy where everything spawn from an ‘erotic’ lie overheard in the girl’s toilet. Olive (played by Emma Stone) used the rumour to her advantage to climb up the social ladder and to keep her reputation she turns it into a business. Marianne (played by Amanda Bynes) being a Christian activist tries to ‘reach out’ to her and Olive’s best friend has turned against her. Her parents, unlike ordinary parents, have brought a bit more to the movie. Easy A is a funny and enjoyable movie that I would recommend others to watch it.
It is out in cinema now so why not enjoy your weekend with a light hearted movie to unwind?
After hearing so many great feedbacks for Kick Ass, I was interested to watch it myself. I’ve got my chance tonight after having a lovely Japanese meal with Richard, Ioanna, Chung and Carmen. It wasn’t expensive and it’s run by real Japnese. No offense but I believe people know how to make their own cultural food best. Anyway, we went back to Carmen’s place for Ioanna’s birthday cake and then sat down for a movie. We watched the beginning of Saw 6 and it’s gross! Man, I shouldn’t even mentioned it or else I might have nightmare about it. Arrgggg…… sigh. Back to what I was saying, as you can guessed we ended up watching Kick Ass.
The movie is more violent than I expected it and more bloody too. It’s full of action and you’ll see blood splattered every 5 minutes? The film reflects on normal, originally people’s wish to become or to have a heroic figure. You’ll see a lot of bad guys during the movie and they all come with knives and guns. I like ‘Hit Girl’. I think she is really cool; being a 12 years old she could really fight. ‘Kick Ass’ on the other hand I should applaused his bravery to stand up and do something about it while he is as weak as a chicken. I’m going to be a spoiler and said, I don’t like how ‘Big Daddy’ got killed at the end! This film is not realistic anyway, so why not just kill all the bad guys and have the good guys win AND ALIVE! Personally, I just don’t like people die in movies. Normally I would chose comedy, romance and animated movies. Anyway, the combination of music/sound and action is really good. Overall, I think it’s ok. It’s not as good as others put it to be or I just had a high expectation of it from the beginning due to many good feedbacks?
Oh well~ I should blog about another movie I’ve watched a couple of days agao. It’s a korean movie and is not as serious. It’s a comedy. I might do that tomorrow.
